"Can I Have It for Free?" — A Conversation Worth Having at the Farm

One of the things we love most about operating Carolina Pride Pastures is welcoming visitors to our alpaca farm in South Carolina. Every week, we meet visitors from across the state and beyond who come to enjoy feeding the farm animals, touring the farm, and unique hands-on farm experiences with our entire herd and flock of chickens, ducks, geese, and turkeys. Children, especially, bring an incredible sense of wonder to the farm.

They ask questions about the alpacas, how we care for them, what they eat, and how life on a family farm works. Over the last few years, we've noticed another question being asked more frequently: "Can I have it for free?"

Whether an item from our farm store or a souvenir from their visit, many young visitors are quick to ask if they can take something home at no cost. There is nothing wrong with curiosity. In fact, questions are how children learn. But hearing this question so often has made us wonder: Are families talking about the real cost of farming and small businesses?

At Carolina Pride Pastures, we certainly do.

We talk about the cost of hay, grain, veterinary care, fencing, shelters, equipment maintenance, and the countless hours required to care for our alpacas every day. We discuss what it takes to provide safe, enjoyable farm tours and memorable agritourism experiences for our guests.

Many people see a beautiful alpaca farm and smiling animals. What they don't always see are the early mornings, late nights, unexpected repairs, rising feed costs, and daily responsibilities that make those experiences possible.
